Minneapolis, Minn. – In front of a crowd of 10,201 people, the Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Ice Hockey team faced off against the third-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday evening, falling 5-2 in a competitive non-conference game. The Lakers battled throughout, scoring twice and generating numerous chances, but Minnesota's high-powered offense proved too much.
How It Happened:
The Gophers came out firing, scoring four goals in the first period to build a commanding 4-0 lead. Mercyhurst's defense regrouped, and the Lakers started to push back late in the opening frame. Jaryd Sych got the Lakers on the board at 17:43 with an even-strength goal, assisted by Matteo Disipio and Dustin Geregach.
The second period saw both teams clamp down defensively, with neither side finding the back of the net. Goaltender Michael Chambre made several key saves to keep the Lakers within striking distance.
In the third period, Minnesota extended their lead to 5-1 with a goal by Beckett Hendrickson at 1:19. The Lakers responded at 8:28 when Spencer Smith scored unassisted, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Despite a late power-play opportunity, Mercyhurst was unable to close the gap further.
