Chicago, IL- The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team won their third game in a row against the DePaul University Blue Demons.
Jorge Tallada Torres and
Luis Felipe Santos both got on the score sheet to help lead the Lakers to victory.
How it Happened
The first action of the game started with a potential penalty kick conceded by
Callum Cleary in the 11th minute. However, the call went to video review. Thankfully for the Lakers the call was overturned. After back-and-forth action through much of the first half, the Lakers were awarded a corner in the 44th minute.
Asher Johnson sent in a wonderful inswinging corner that found
Dylan Sumner. Sumner was able to lay it off for
Jorge Tallada Torres who gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead just before the half ended.
In the 49th minute, Noeh Hernández stepped up to take a free kick on the top left corner of the penalty box. The spot of the foul didn't entirely favor the left foot of Hernández as it ended up sailing over the bar. Shortly after, George Wyatt had a header in the 51st minute for the Blue Demons that was miraculously saved by
Danilo Abayo. Abayo was fully extended to get a strong hand on the ball to prevent the Blue Demons from leveling the score.
In the 54th minute,
Dylan Sumner found
Luis Felipe Santos on a great run into the final third. Santos was able to take it in stride and find the bottom corner of the goal to extend the Lakers lead to 2-0. Things were going well for the Lakers so far. However, In the 57th minute,
Benjamin Buckley conceded a penalty kick on a rather dangerous 50/50 challenge where Buckley appeared to take a hit to the head. It took the officiating crew a few minutes to make a decision and was then confirmed a penalty and yellow card to Buckley. Noeh Hernández stepped up for the Blue Demons, sent Abayo the other way, and slotted it home to make it 2-1.
In the 60th minute Logan Finnegan received a pass from Keagan Pace and scored on a breakaway to tie the game 2-2. He then had another breakaway in the 69th minute, but this time Abayo made a tremendous kick save to keep the game level.
In the 77th minute
Philipp Strube played a ball across to
Jorge Tallada Torres who scored a sensational, no-look goal with the outside of his foot to put the Lakers ahead 3-2. The Lakers were able to hold on and secure the hard-fought victory.
