Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Men's Lacrosse team hosted Seton Hill in the GMAC Championship Game. In a game that saw six lead changes, the Lakers came away with a 12-9 win over the Griffins, winning their second straight GMAC Tournament Championship.
In Head Coach Trey Keeley's first season with the program, he guided the Lakers to a 13-4 (8-0 GMAC) record to this point, while winning the GMAC Regular Season title and now the GMAC Tournament title.
How it Happened
Ethan Landymore opened the games scoring with his 46th goal of the season. Seton Hill came back with back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead. The Lakers got goals from Colin Tardif and Jeremi Phoenix-Lefebvre to take a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Griffins take a 6-5 lead late, but Ethan Landymore found an opening and fired a shot that found the back of the net, tying the game at 6-6 at halftime.
After the Griffins scored to take a 7-6 lead, the Lakers went on a 3-0 run to grab a 9-7 lead late in the third quarter. The Griffins got a quick goal to cut the deficit to just one. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Landymore blocked a pass from the Griffins goaltender, and it bounced straight into the net for an insane goal as time expired for the goal. The Lakers led 10-8.
The Lakers outscored the Griffins 2-1 in the fourth quarter including a goal by Chase Petschke that put the game away in the final minutes of the game.
Highlights
Ethan Landymore scored a trio of goals to help the Lakers earn the win. His three goals in today's game helped him clinch tournament MVP honors.
Colin Tardif also scored a trio of goals for the Lakers.
Chase Petschke, Jeremi Phoenix-Lefebvre, and Antonio Rossetti each had a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
Brett Olney stopped nine shots and earned the win in net. Olney made timely saves throughout the entire game. Olney earned All-Tournament team honors.
Along with Landymore and Olney, Charlie Gleason, Nate Latshaw, and Braden McCard earned All-Tournament honors.
Next Up
The Lakers clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament with the win and will await their opponent.
