Ashland, Oh. - Mercyhurst baseball made the trip to the buckeye state for one nine-inning game with Ashland Tuesday afternoon with the team not quite able to get it done on the road. The Lakers were able to plate 11 runs in the game, but it was still not enough in the 12-11 loss.
How it Happened
The Lakers opened up the offense with one run in their half of the first thanks to Chris Juchno who drove in Luke Jackson on a single to right field. The team then went back to work in the second with a pair of runs, making it 3-1. It was the lead-off hitter Matt Christopher who helped deal the damage as he doubled down the left field line to drive in two. In the third, the Lakers made it a third-straight inning in which they scored as Ranciel Ventura drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles showed they were not going to go away as they managed to tie things up in their half of the third, making it 4-4. Mercyhurst immediately responded with a trio of runs of their own in the top of the fourth with a triple of Zachary Kourous to right field brought in a pair before the Laker third basemen made it home himself in the next at-bat. After one more run in the fifth made it 8-5, Mercyhurst added three to their total in the sixth.
It was the middle of the order that did the damage in the sixth to help the Lakers add some insurance. A double from Juchno drove in the first of the three runs in the innings while he came around to touch home off of a home run from Mitchell Grosch who sent one over the way in left to make it 11-6. Ashland manage to stop the bleeding and almost come all the way back in their half of the sixth. They ended up scoring five runs on three hits and a wild pitch to make it a 11-10 game going into the final few frames. A home run in the eighth for the Eagles helped them tie things up before they walked it off on a two-out, bases loaded single, 12-11.
Highlights
Mercyhurst finished with six extra base hits in the game with four doubles, a triple, and a home run to their ledger for the second-most extra base hits in a game so far this season with only their nine in their season opener against Notre Dame being more. Chris Juchno accounted for two of the team's doubles to be the only Laker with multiple extra base hits while Mitchell Grosch added on with his third home run in his last five games.
Next Game
Mercyhurst comes back closer to home for their next set of games as the team goes to Gannon on Friday, April 12th, for a pair of games before hosting the Golden Knights the following day beginning at 1:00 p.m.
