Bloomsburg, Pa. - Mercyhurst men's and women's tennis put a bow on another weekend with a matchup with Bloomsburg Sunday, seeing each team grab a win. The pair of victories proved to be convincing ones as the men grabbed a 5-2 decision to move to 13-4 on the season while the women are now 15-4 thanks to their second-straight sweep and the third in last four tires.
How it Happened
The men did not quite get started the way they had hoped as they dropped two of the three doubles contests to fall behind 1-0. It was Ben Davis and Lukas Cabue Valverde who grabbed the lone doubles win for the Lakers with them coming out on top 6-4 at two. Their effort was not enough to help Mercyhurst secure the win, though, as a pair of 6-2 wins for the Huskies put Mercyhurst at a deficit.
Davis was able to get the Lakers on the board and tie things up 1-1 with a dominant win at the three spot, 6-0, 6-0. From there, Colm Schultz was able to put Mercyhurst out on top with his win as the Laker's fourth, 6-2, 6-4. A win at number one for Bloomsburg managed to tie things up 2-2 before Mercyhurst went on a run to secure the win.Â
Cabue Valverde allowed the Lakers to reclaim the lead, 3-2 with his win at the top spot, 6-3, 6-3 before wins at the six spot by Sviatoslav Koliadynski, 6-3, 6-3, clinching the win while Mykhailo Polishchuk's 6-2, 6-4 win at five proved to be the cherry on top.
The women dropped the first contest in doubles play with the Huskies' number three tandem grabbed a 6-2 win. From there, Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy worked their way to a 6-3 win to tie things up before Daria Rogova and Sara Bertolez Puente won by the same score to help Mercyhurst jump out in front.
Rogova continued her strong play into singles play with the freshman earning a 6-1, 6-4 win at the number two spot. She was followed by Murphy as the Laker's three who make it a 3-0 lead with her 6-2, 6-1 win while Kiersten Brown's 6-0, 6-4 win at five clinched the win.
Mercyhurst was not done yet as the team continued to dominate their counterpart, winning each of the next three bouts in straight sets. Bertolez Puente secured a 6-0, 6-2 win before a 6-0, 6-3 win for Valentine Budin at the six spot. It was then Dean who rounded out the effort to allow the Lakers to break out the brooms for the eighth time this year in her 6-2, 7-5 win.
