Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst women's water polo gets set for their final regular season game this weekend as the team hits the road. The Lakers make their way to Loretto, Pa. to see Saint Francis on Saturday, April 13th, in a 2:00 p.m. showdown.
A Look Back
Mercyhurst is 5-22 to this point in the season with a 3-3 mark in the WWPA. The team struggled in the earlier part of the season, dropping each of their 13 contests. Their first win came at home against Penn State Behrend in the middle of February and since then the team has been able to find their groove. The Lakers are 4-3 in their last seven games including back-to-back wins inside the Hallman Aquatics Center to open April with a 15-14 win over Salem and a 9-6 victory against McKendree.
Laker Leaders
Allie Dombkowski has been the leader to this point for the team in points with 57 to her line, scoring 42 goals to go along with 15 assists. She is joined in the 50-point club by Sakura Gavin who has 52 to her ledger with 31 goals and a team-high 21 assists. Rachel Vlietstra rounds out the top three for the Lakers in points with 41 to this point, scoring 24 goals while assisting on 17 more.
Dombkowski's Rolling
Dombkowski and the Lakers competed in the WWPA Erie Classic this past weekend with the team playing in a trio of games and winning two. The native of Erie, Pa. had a big part in those wins as she collected 14 points total across the trio of games with nine goals and five assists to her line. Dombkowski was a consistent threat throughout with her scoring three goals in each game while collecting a season-high six points against Salem on 4/6/24 in the team's 15-14 win. She looks to continue that strong play as the team heads into the postseason in just a few weeks.
Scouting the Flash
Saint Francis is 6-24 to this point in the season with a 1-9 record in conference play in the CWPA. The team has found it tough sledding here of late with losses in each of their last three games with just two wins in their last seven tries. Over the course of those seven games, they have given up 86 goals for an average of just over 12 goals per game, allowing teams to reach double figures on three occasions including 22 for Long Beach State on March 23rd.
Next Game
After their game with SFU, the team turns their attention to the WWPA Championships. The team will head to the west coast to La Mirada, Ca. as Biola hosts the conference tournament beginning on Friday, April 26th, with a new champion being crowned on the 28th.
