Hilton Head Island, S.C. - Mercyhurst men's and women's tennis finished out their weekend the way they hoped to with both grabbing convincing wins over Assumption. The men extended their winning streak to now seven matches with their 6-1 victory while the women make it eight straight and back-to-back sweeps in the 7-0 win.
How it Happened
The men came slow out of the gates and ended up dropping the doubles point, falling in all there contests. The team fought hard in all three bouts, but were unsuccessful with Assumption jumping out in front in the early going. Singles, play proved to be a different story for the Lakers, dominating in that portion of the match. Danylo Rekun secured the first win for Mercyhurst and knotted things up at one apiece in a matchup that ended up going to three sets, 6-3, 6-2, 10-6. Lukas Cabue Valverde was up next for the Lakers with his efforts helping give the team a lead, 2-1, in his 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory.
Ben Davis kept the ball rolling win his matchup out of the three spot for the Lakers and made it a 3-1 advantage. Davis had a little of an easier time than his teammates with him needing only two sets to grab the 6-2, 6-4 win. From there, Colm Schultz secured the win at fourth with a 6-4, 6-1 victory before a 6-4, 6-4 win for Mykhailo Polishchuck and a 6-4, 6-0 victory for Sviatoslav Koliadynski rounded out the group.
The women got off to a fast start in their matchup, claiming all three bouts in doubles play. Kayla Dean and Roisin Murphy got things started with a convincing 6-1 win as the top tandem with Sara Bertolez Puente and Daria Rogova to follow with a 6-3 win. Valentine Budin and Kiersten Brown finished out the trio of wins, having to go the distance in a 77-62 decision.
Singles play was more of the same with Mercyhurst dominating most of the way. Rogova picked up the first win in singles, earning a 6-1, 6-0 win as the team's number two before Dean made it a 3-0 lead with her 6-4, 6-2 effort out of the top spot. The Lakers went on to clinch the win in their next decision with Murphy grabbing a hard-fought 7-5, 6-3, 10-2 win. She was followed by Bertolez Puente and Brown who both needed three sets to claim their wins as well.
Bertolez Puente won her first set 6-3 before falling by the same score next time around. She ended up getting hot from there and finished things out in a 10-7Â win. Brown ended up dropping her first canto, 6-1, before a 6-4 win tied things up while a 10-7Â third set handed her the victory. Budin finished out the effort for the Lakers, completing the sweep in her dominant 6-2, 6-2 win and putting a bow on another successful weekend.

Mercyhurst has just one matchup on their schedule for the new week with the team heading to St. Bonaventure to take on the Bonnies. The Lakers make the trip north to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. to see their opponent in a mid-week matchup on Wednesday, March 13th.
