Rowing Gets Spring Season Underway

3/22/2024 11:00:00 AM

Erie Pa. - Mercyhurst men's rowing kicks off the second leg of their season this weekend, looking to get things started off on the right foot. The men go to Marietta, Oh. to take on Marietta College after a solid start to their year in the fall, looking to bring domiance to the water once again.

Roster Overview: Heavyweights

The Laker's heavyweights brings back a crew similar to what the team had last year with eight of the 12 team members being returners. Of that group, the team will look to rely on the veteran presence of rowers like Nate Harris and Matthew Wnek. The team also adds four newcomers to the fold with each hoping to make their mark here in the early portion of their careers on the water.

Roster Overview: Lightweights

The lightweights have a bit of a larger group this year compared to their counterparts with 16 members of the crew. Of that group, 11 return from last year's team and look to make a major impact once again. Their five newcomers have the same goal in mind, hoping to secure their spot in the boat and help them team get off to a fast start in the spring.

A Look Back: Men

After a cancellation of Findlay Fall Classic, the men's teams competed in two races during the fall semester, going to Boston, Ma. for the Head of the Charles in late October followed by the Challenge on the Canal. During their time in the Head of the Charles, the men's lightweight four ended up coming in seventh in their race with a time of 17:14.659 while the heavyweight men's fours came in 23rd during their time in the water with a time of 18:36.348. After putting together their solid showing in such a major event, they hope to use that to propel them forward here in the spring.

Next Race

The men do not have to wait around all to long for their next event as they get back out into the water on Saturday, March 30th, in the Lightweight Invite hosted by Columbia in Leonia, NJ.
