2/24/2024 7:14:00 PM

Box Score

Glenville, WV. - Mercyhurst baseball played the middle game of their weekend set Saturday afternoon, looking to grab a win after last night's one-run loss. They were unable to do so, though, with Charleston able to score 10 runs in the final four innings to help them to the win.

How it Happened

Mercyhurst fired the opening salvo of the game in the second inning as Jayden Walker provided a spark at the bottom of the order. The first baseman shot one back up the middle to help the Lakers grab the early lead with Zachary Kourous scoring from second on the hit. Corbin Foy made it look like that one run would be all the support he would need in this one with him fanning two in the third inning, giving him seven through the first four innings of work.

Charleston managed to break through in the fifth inning with one run to tie things up 1-1 thanks to their work on the base paths. Mercyhurst did not allow things up remain tied for all that long, though, as they put up two runs in the bottom of the inning. It was Eric Chorba who provided the fireworks for the Lakers with the outfielder going opposite field for a two-run home run to make it 3-1.

The Golden Eagles responded in a big way in the next half inning, scoring four runs to give them a 5-3 lead that they would only add on to as the game went along. A lead off single followed by a failed pickoff attempt and a steal of third allowed Charleston to get a base runner in scoring position early. A single up the middle made it a 3-2 before a sacrifice fly with no outs tied things up with Charleston continuing to battle at the plate until the scoreboard read 5-3 in their favor.

After a scoreless seventh frame, they came back and put six runs on the board in the eighth inning to help them put the final nail in the coffin and take home the 11-3 win.

Highlights

Matt Christopher led the way on offense with two hits on the day in his five at-bats while four different Lakers were each tied for second with one base knock apiece. Of that group, Eric Chorba was the leader in RBIs with two, having a home run for one of the team's two extra base hits with Mitchell Grosch having the other in the form of a double. On the mound, Corbin Foy went 5.1 inning while giving up one earned run with 10 strikeouts to his line, seeing eight of those come looking for a new career-high in Ks.
