Baseball Heads for West Virginia

2/22/2024 10:00:00 AM

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst baseball get back out on the diamond this upcoming weekend for the first time in a couple of weeks as they head to Glenville, WV for a three-game set. After a historic start to the campaign in their 16-0 win over Notre Dame (Oh.), the team looks to keep things rolling when they see Glenville on Friday, February 23rd at 6:00 p.m., before a 2:30 p.m. matchup the following day with Charleston. They'll then return for one more game against D'Youville on the 25th with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.

A Look Back

Mercyhurst began their season against Notre Dame (Oh.) on February 9th in a game that was dominated by the Lakers. They ended up with 16 runs in the game on 17 hits with eight of those going for extra bases, including six home runs. The win was the first in the tenure of new Head Coach Jimmy Latona who wrote his name in the history books for the first shutout for a Laker coach in their first ever game, the largest margin of victory, and the second-most runs scored in a coaching debut. Jack Malec hit out of the nine spot for the team and provided plenty of fire power from the bottom of the order, hitting the first home run of the season for the team while also hitting a double to be the only player with multiple extra base hits in the contest.

Scouting D'Youville

The Saints have played two games so far this season with both of them coming against PSAC foe Clarion. D'Youville got the win in both games, doing so with plenty of offense as they score nine runs in each game. It has been Jon Simpson who did a lot of the damage in the team's season opener as he finished with two home runs and nine RBIs over the two games, hitting for an OPS of 2.000 across his eight at bats.

Scouting Charleston

The Golden Eagles have played four games to this point in the season, going 3-1 in that time with wins in each of their last three tries. Two of those victories came against Wingate, 8-2 and 3-2, before a three-game set with Tiffin turned into just one contest that Charleston won 7-3. The Golden Eagles come off a season in which they finished 43-12 and they hope to repeat that success on their way to another appearance in the Atlantic Regional.

Scouting the Pioneers

The host school Glenville State is 2-1 to this point in the year after a three-game set with Clarion where they dropped game one 9-4 before 5-3 and 5-4 wins to claim the series this past weekend. It's a full slate of PSAC teams for the Pioneers to begin the new season with the Golden Eagles being followed by West Chester on the 23rd at 11:00 a.m. before Millersville on the 24th and the Lakers in the weekend finale. The team found themselves under .500 last year overall while going just 7-11 in nonconference games and hope their weekend set in their friendly confines can help reverse that fortune.

Next Game

The Lakers head for what promises to be better weather after their time in West Virginia as the team goes to Cary, NC to begin the month of March. They begin their time down south with Concord University on the 1st before seeing Frostburg State the following day while routing out their time away from home with West Chester on the 3rd at 1:00 p.m.
