West Springfield, Mass. - The Mercyhurst Men's Ice Hockey team looked for a bounce back performance in game two against AIC. The game went into a shootout where the Lakers came away with the shootout win and an extra point in the AHA standings.
How it Happened
The Yellow Jackets got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on two Julius Janhonen goals. Owen Say made 14 saves in the first period and kept the Yellow Jackets from adding on.
In the second period, the Lakers offense found its groove. Barrett Brooks made a nice move getting to his backhand and beat the goaltender to get the Lakers on the board. After both teams killed off penalties, Cameron Ricotta gathered a loose puck and found the back of the net, tying the game at two. Great goaltending on both sides kept the game tied at the end of two periods.
After a scoreless third period that saw Owen Say pick up 17 more saves, the game went into overtime. In overtime, Adrien Bisson, Marko Reifenberger, Barrett Brooks, Mickey Burns, and Boris Skalos all threw their bodies in front of the puck to prevent a shot from getting to Owen Say.
Three periods and overtime weren't enough to settle this game, so it went into a shootout. Both teams went 0-3 to start the shootout before Barrett Brooks once again made a beautiful move, getting to his backhand, and beating the goaltender. The Yellow Jackets had one more attempt to send it to another shootout, but Owen Say made a huge stop, securing a shootout win and an extra point in the standings.
