Chicago, Ill. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Volleyball team faced a tough matchup on Saturday afternoon, falling to Chicago State in three sets (16-25, 10-25, 18-25) at the Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center. With this result, the Lakers drop to 3-19 overall and 2-10 in NEC play, while the Cougars improve to 15-9 overall and 11-1 in conference action.
How It Happened:
Chicago State came out strong in the first set, hitting .194% as a team and capitalizing on Mercyhurst's early errors. Despite key plays from Andrea Zaric and Kaitlin Murphy, the Lakers fell 25-16. The second set saw Chicago State dominate with an impressive .500% hitting percentage, keeping Mercyhurst to just 10 points. The Lakers' efforts by Alia Mastromatteo and Trinity Tatupu were not enough to close the gap.
In the third set, Mercyhurst showed more resistance and recorded their highest hitting percentage of the match at .188%. Andrea Zaric led the Lakers' offense with 9 kills, while Kaitlin Murphy added 5 kills and 2 blocks. However, Chicago State's consistent play allowed them to seal the match with a 25-18 win.
