Lakers and Griffins Settle For 3-3 Tie

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Ice Hockey team picked up a 3-3 tie against the Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. After tying the game late in regulation, the Lakers got shootout conversions from Steven Agriogianis and Mickey Burns to pick up a 2-0 shootout win. 

How It Happened: 

Canisius struck first, with Matteo Giampa scoring at 5:56 of the opening period. The Golden Griffins extended their lead to 2-0 on a power-play goal by Trey Funk at 16:33. 

Mercyhurst responded early in the second period when Tyler DesRochers picked up a goal at 1:54, assisted by Tyler Nasca and Connor Pelc. Canisius regained a two-goal lead at 6:46 with a shorthanded goal from Jackson Nieuwendyk. However, Mercyhurst pulled back within one at 13:42, as Tyler Nasca scored off assists from Spencer Smith and Dominik Bartecko

The Lakers tied the game at 3-3 late in the third period when Dustin Geregach scored at 15:58, assisted by Connor Pelc and Christian Kocsis. Despite chances for both teams in overtime, the game went to a shootout. 

In the shootout, Steven Agriogianis and Mickey Burns converted their attempts, while goaltender Carter McPhail stopped all Canisius shooters. 

Notable Performances: 

  • Dustin Geregach scored his sixth goal of the season, tying the game late in the third period. 

  • Tyler DesRochers and Tyler Nasca each contributed a goal, with Nasca adding an assist for a two-point night. The goal by Nasca was the first of his career. 

  • Connor Pelc recorded his first multi-point game of the season with two assists. 

  • Goaltender Carter McPhail made 31 saves and was perfect in the shootout. 

Up Next: 

The Lakers will return to action on December 6th and 7th when they host Bentley in another Atlantic Hockey matchup. Puck drop is set for Friday December 6th at 7 PM.
