Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Men's Hockey team came up just short against Canisius, losing 3-2 in a heartbreaking finish on Friday night at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Despite a valiant effort and a go-ahead goal in the third period, the Lakers were unable to hold off the Golden Griffins, who scored the game-winner with just 51 seconds remaining.
How It Happened:
Mercyhurst struck first late in the opening period, with Dustin Geregach scoring his fifth goal of the season on an even-strength tally at 19:54. The goal, assisted by Steven Agriogianis and Mickey Burns, gave the Lakers a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Canisius tied the game in the second period at 16:55 when Matt Vermaeten scored off assists from Alec Cicero and Michael Colella. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the final frame.
The Lakers reclaimed the lead early in the third period when Brendan Lamb lit the lamp at 1:21, with Sean James providing the assist. However, Canisius responded at 7:39, as Michael Colella netted the equalizer, assisted by Matteo Giampa and Ethan Robertson. The Golden Griffins sealed the victory with just 51 seconds left in regulation, as Matteo Giampa scored the game-winner, assisted by Carter Patterson and Kash Rasmussen.
