Erie, PA- Mercyhurst University is excited to announce the launch of men's and women's Track & Field, debuting in the 2025-2026 academic year. This step is a testament to Mercyhurst's dynamic vision as it continues its transition to NCAA Division I athletics as a member of the Northeast Conference (NEC).

Track & Field, one of the nation's most popular and inclusive sports, offers incredible opportunities for student-athletes to shine across both indoor and outdoor seasons. By introducing these programs, Mercyhurst not only strengthens its athletics portfolio but also reinforces the university's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and recruitment of top-tier talent. In preparation for the inaugural season, Mercyhurst has forged partnerships with Penn State Behrend, Erie High School, and Mercyhurst Prep to provide practice facilities for the new teams. Competitions will be held at various partner facilities as well as regional, national, and NEC venues.

"These collaborations highlight Mercyhurst's dedication to innovative community engagement while fostering a competitive and supportive environment for our student-athletes," said Vice President for Student Life Dr. Laura Zirkle. The university is actively seeking a head coach and assistant coaching staff to lead this new era, with Mike Williamson, head cross country coach, joining the Track & Field program to ensure a strong foundation. Recruitment is already in full swing, targeting exceptional student-athletes from the Erie area and beyond.

"Track & Field is one of the most popular and accessible sports in the United States. We are thrilled to bring this program to Mercyhurst as part of our Division I journey. It will expand opportunities for student-athletes while strengthening our ties to the local community," said Mercyhurst Athletics Director Joe Spano. The addition of Track & Field is a cornerstone of Mercyhurst's strategy to expand its athletic programs and establish a competitive edge in Division I.

By launching these dynamic new teams, Mercyhurst aligns with its fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) institutions in sponsoring Track & Field, further cementing its reputation as a rising force in both the conference and the broader NCAA Division I landscape. This initiative underscores Mercyhurst's dedication to fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus culture while enhancing its visibility on the national stage. The inaugural men's and women's Track & Field teams will hit the ground running in fall 2025, proudly donning the Lakers uniform and competing with passion and excellence in regional and national arenas.
