Lakers Open NEC Play with Stonehill

Erie, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Lakers Volleyball team continues their season on the road as they prepare to face the Stonehill Skyhawks this Friday and Saturday. The match on Friday is set to begin at 6:00 PM, while the matchup on Saturday is set for 4:00 PM at the Merkert Gymnasium, where the Lakers will aim to bounce back and secure their first NEC win. 

Laker Outlook 

Mercyhurst comes into the match with a 1-9 overall record, hoping to end a challenging stretch of games. The Lakers have seen standout performances from key players, with Paige Miller leading the team with 82 kills, averaging 2.73 kills per set. Alia Mastromatteo has been the primary playmaker, leading the team with 101 assists, while Kelsie Gaiter-Davis anchors the defense with 100 digs this season. Kaitlin Murphy has been a force at the net, leading the team with 17 total blocks. 

A Look at Stonehill

Stonehill comes into the matchup with a 4-8 overall record, looking to build on their recent weekend split against Assumption. The Skyhawks are led by Mia Berardino, who has been a dominant offensive force with 93 kills, averaging 3.00 kills per set and hitting at an impressive .264 clip. Georgia Murphy and Emma Graves have also contributed significantly with 74 and 94 kills, respectively. 

Defensively, the Skyhawks have been solid, with Paloma Gonzalez Jaramillo and Sarah Frager leading the blocking effort, combining for 23 block assists. Stonehill also boasts a strong serving game, averaging 2.00 aces per set, with Abby Farrell contributing a team-high 19 service aces.

  • Mercyhurst's blocking, led by Kaitlin Murphy, against Stonehill's attacking trio of Berardino, Murphy, and Graves. 

  • The serving battle: Stonehill averages 2.00 aces per set, while Mercyhurst is not far behind with 1.69 aces per set. Both teams will look to capitalize on their service game to put pressure on the opposition.
