Game Recap: Men's Water Polo | | Jesse Hall, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

Men’s Water Polo Falls in Weekend Set

Norton, Ma.- Mercyhurst Men's Water Polo was unable to get it done on day two of the season as they now fall to 0-4 on the young year. Despite their best efforts and some solid offensive runs, they fell to MIT by a final of 20-12 before dropping their afternoon matchup with Augustana 22-7.

How it Happened

MIT jumped out to an early lead, commanding an 8-2 advantage at the end of the first period. The Lakers were able to get on the board in the later stages of the canto with Owen Hardner picking up where he left off. After leading the team in goals yesterday, Hardner scored with just over two minutes to go in the period.

Matej Kovacevic helped add on in the final minute as the Lakers looked to find some momentum going into the second period. Mercyhurst did manage to keep pace with their counterpart as they were only outscored by two goals through the final three periods, but the hole they found themselves to begin the game proved to be too big of one to climb out of in loss number one on the day.

Game two against Augustana was a bit of a reversal as the Lakers were only behind by two at the end of the first, 4-2, thanks to goals from Teagan Thomas and Hardner. The Vikings came out with a bang in the second, outscoring Mercyhurst 6-1, though, as they were able to take a 10-3 lead into the halftime break. From there on out, Augustana was in control as they managed to score five in the third and a game-high seven in the fourth in the convincing win.

Highlights

Owen Hardner was once again the go-to scorer for the Lakers, netting five goals in his two games with four coming against the Engineers. Keller Sens had a very strong showing as well with three while Thomas collected a pair in game two against the Vikings. In goal, Tony Golin secured 22 saves.

Next Game

The Lakers are set to get back out in the water next Saturday, September 9th, when they take on Washington and Jefferson at 12:00 p.m. followed by John Hopkins at 4:00 p.m. in Morgantown, WV.
