Volleyball Drops Matchup with Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team traveled to Slippery Rock for a PSAC matchup. After the Lakers won set one, Slippery Rock rattled off three straight wins to take the match 3-1.  

How it Happened 

Brielle Sterns got the scoring started for the Lakers with a kill. Slippery Rock got out to a 5-3 lead early in set one. Andrea Zaric closed the gap with a kill of her own. After a little bit of a run, Slippery Rock held a 9-5 lead. A 5-0 run by the Lakers that was started by a Maggie Thomas kill and ended with an Andrea Zaric service ace gave the Lakers a 10-9 lead. It forced a Slippery Rock timeout. Coming out of the timeout it was back-and-forth throughout the rest of the first set. The score was 19-19, but Maggie Thomas broke the tie with a kill. The Lakers ended the first set with a 6-0 run and would take the set 25-19. Set one ended with a service ace from Andrea Zaric

Set two started with a lot of back and forth from both sides. It was all tied up at five early on. Slippery Rock went on a short 4-0 run to take the lead. Maggie Thomas and Kate Hennessy both had kills to help the Lakers tie up set two at nine. It was all tied up at 16, when Maggie Thomas continued her hot start to the match with yet another kill to give the Lakers a one-point lead. Slippery Rock tied it back up at 19. Andrea Zaric broke the tie with a kill. Kaitlin Murphy extended the lead to two with a kill of her own. Slippery Rock scored the next three points to take set two 25-23.  

Kate Hennessy got the scoring going for the Lakers in set number three. It was all tied up at four, but Brielle Sterns added a kill to break the tie and give the Lakers the lead. Slippery Rock went on a short run to take a 9-5 lead, but the Lakers wouldn't go away. They were able to tie it up at nine on a Kate Hennessy kill. A lot of back and forth saw set three all tied at 15. Andrea Zaric gave the Lakers the lead with another kill, but Slippery Rock tied it back up. Slippery Rock took a two-point lead, but an Alexa Mitchell kill brought the Lakers to within one. Slippery Rock closed set three on a 7-4 run to take set three and go up in the match 2-1.  

Slippery Rock took a 1-0 lead, but Kate Hennessy tied it up with a kill. Slippery Rock held a 6-4 lead before Andrea Zaric added a kill to draw within one. Slippery Rock went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 12-5. Kate Hennessy was able to break the Slippery Rock run with a kill. After some back and forth from both sides, Kaitlin Murphy and Corinne Bechtold added kills to bring the Lakers to within five. It wasn't enough for the Lakers, as Slippery Rock finished set four on a 15-6 run to win set four and the match 3-1.     

Highlights 

Maggie Thomas was the leader in kills with 12, followed by Kate Hennessy with 11, and Andrea Zaric with 10. Kaitlin Murphy had two blocks on the night. Alexa Mitchell added 35 assists.  

Next Up 

The Lakers will travel to Seton Hill for a PSAC matchup tomorrow starting at 12 PM.
