Volleyball Looks to Build Momentum

Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team will look to continue their hot streak as they travel to Slippery Rock and Seton Hill this week.    

  1. History Lesson 

The Lakers played both Slippery Rock and Seton Hill twice a season ago, a home and home during PSAC play.  Slippery Rock won both matchups against the Lakers, winning 3-0 in the first matchup, and 3-1 in second matchup.  Seton Hill won both matchups, winning 30- in the first matchup, and 3-0 in the second matchup.     

  1. A Look Back 

The Lakers took on IUP and Cal (Pa.) this past week.  IUP took the matchup with the Lakers 3-0.  Kate Hennessy and Andrea Zaric were tied for the team lead with seven kills each.  Kaitlin Murphy added five blocks.  Alexa Mitchell added 19 assists, and Paige Miller had 17 digs.  Later in the week they hosted Cal (Pa.).  After going down 2-1 in the match, the Lakers found their groove and won the next two sets to win in five, 3-2.  Andrea Zaric was the leader in kills with 16, Kate Hennessy and Kaitlin Murphy were right behind her with 13.  Alexa Mitchell had three service aces along with 48 assists.  Kaitlin Murphy had three blocks, and Paige Miller had 16 digs.  Kate Hennessy surpassed 100 kills on the season this weekend against Cal (Pa.).

  1. Momentum 

Coming into this week, the Lakers have won two of their last three games, including a comeback against Cal (Pa.).  They will look to ride that momentum this week as they get into the heart of their PSAC schedule.   

  1. A Look at the Opponent 

Slippery Rock is currently 8-6 on the season and are currently on a two-game losing streak with losses to Gannon and Clarion.  Coming into the matchup, Slippery Rock is led by Erica Selfridge and Callie Chevalier, who lead the team in kills with 139 and 122.  Lauren Vonderhaar has 58 blocks so far this season.  Seton Hill is currently 6-8 on the season and are also on a two-game losing streak with losses to Edinboro and Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  Seton Hill is led by Paige Cole, who leads the team in kills with 193.  Catie Flohr also has 120 kills and 30 blocks.   

The Lakers will take on Slippery Rock on Friday at 7 PM, and then will travel to Seton Hill the next day for a match that starts at 12 PM.
