Newton Scores Seven to Give Lakers 12-10 Win Over Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - The Women's Lacrosse team earned a major win against Gannon on their field today, Apr. 26, 2023. 

The final score was 12-10.

Quarter One

It did not even take a minute for Victoria Gottorff to score the first of the game. 

Maggie Newton then went on a streak to score four unanswered goals at 11:03, 10:03, 4:00, and 1:26. Of those four, one was on a man-up opportunity. The score was now 5-0.

The Lakers had nine shots on goal and were 6-6 on their clears. 

Quarter Two

The Golden Knights struck first in the quarter at 14:16, but Newton was unstoppable. She put another one in the net on a man-up at 11:58. Gabby McGinn grabbed the assist. 

Just like clockwork, the Golden Knights scored, and Newton followed for her sixth goal of the game at 6:17. McGinn earned the apple once more. 

Gannon pushed the score to 7-3 at 4:41. 

Megan Millard and Whitley Easton scored back-to-back to close the half with a score of 9-3.

Paige Maneri made four saves and the team won three draw controls.

Quarter Three

A pass from Newton allowed Meghan Nasman to score the first of the quarter at 13:26. 

The Golden Knights were determined and scored four straight at 12:12, 5:53, 3:12, and 00:02. 

The score going into the fourth was 10-7. The team had five ground balls and two draw controls. 

Quarter Four

Gannon was still on their streak and scored at 13:39. 

Newton struck again at 11:59 to close out Gannon's streak. 

Easton followed with her second of the game to give the Lakers the four-goal lead. The time on the clock was 10:53.

The Golden Knights fought back, bringing the score to 12-9 at 6:19, and scored once more at 1:13. 

Maneri made four saves and the team recovered four ground balls. 

Highlights

Maggie Newton earned eight points, seven of which were goals. 

Mackenzie Murphy caused three turnovers. 

Gabby McGinn had a hat trick of assists. 

Paige Maneri made 11 saves.

Playoff Picture

The Lakers will need to win against Slippery Rock to earn a spot in the PSAC Postseason. The top three teams from each region will play in the playoffs.

On the Horizon

The team will finish the regular season at Slippery Rock on April 29, 2023. The clock will start at 1:00 p.m.
