Box Score Kutztown, PA- The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team traveled to Kutztown, PA this afternoon to play in the PSAC semi-finals against West Chester University. In a crossover matchup, and to reach the PSAC Championship, the Lakers fell short in an overtime stunner by a score of 2-1.
How it Happened
In a game which featured two of the top defenses in the PSAC, many predicted the game to be played primarily in the middle of the field. It wasn't ten minutes into the match that the Lakers switched that narrative. Off a throw in, Corinne Morgan beat a West Chester defender and centered a pass to Karah Van Horn. Van Horn handled the pass and lofted a ball into the upper left corner to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Despite leading in time of possession, and firing off 10 shots in the first half, Maddie Elbro and the Laker defense turned West Chester away to keep a one goal lead heading into halftime.
A little over ten minutes into the second half, the PSAC East Athlete of the Year, Faith Matter, found a ball in open space and beat Elbro to tie the game at one.
Both teams buckled down the rest of the half as each defense held strong. At the end of regulation, the game remained tied as each PSAC Athlete of the Year recorded a goal for their squad to bring the match to overtime. On numerous occasions, Maddie Elbro showed exactly why she's the PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, posting 10 total saves in regulation.
Seconds into the first overtime, Kaitlynn Haughey found the back of the net to give West Chester a 2-1 lead. The Lakers couldn't get anything going in the first 10 minutes of overtime and it was more of the same in the final 10 minutes of overtime.
