Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team host Clarion for a Homecoming matchup today. After three hard fought sets, Clarion was able to come out on top with a win in three sets.
How it Happened
Clarion got out to a quick 5-2 lead in the first set, but Kate Hennessy and Kaitlin Murphy each had a kill to draw within one. Midway through the set, Maggie Thomas added a kill to make the score14-12 in favor of Clarion. A quick 3-0 run by Clarion made it 17-12. After the Lakers gained two points back, Clarion went on another run to make it 21-14. Both teams scored four points down the stretch, but Clarion was able to take the first set 25-18.
In set two, Clarion got up on the Lakers quickly. It was 7-1 right out of the gate. Kate Hennessy and Paige Miller both had a kill to cut the lead down. Both teams went back and forth, countering each kill by one another. Clarion had a kill; Paige Miller had a kill. Clarion added another, Maggie Thomas got one right back. Late in the second set it was 20-12 in favor of Clarion. A block by Alexa Mitchell and a bad set by Clarion, gave the Lakers a bit of a boost to try and cut into this lead. Maggie Thomas got in on it as well with yet another kill. The late surge wasn't enough as Clarion would take set two 25-16.
Clarion took an early 6-4 lead in set three. The Lakers got the serve back and Kate Hennessy finessed a point. Off two Alyssa Krause serves, the Lakers were able to tie the set up at 13. Clarion took the lead by one, but Kate Hennessy tied it right back up. Clarion followed that up with a 6-0 run to take a commanding lead. The Lakers tried to fight their way back into it as Mevelyn Brazoban notched a kill of her own. Paige Miller followed it up with a kill of her own, but the late surge fell short, as Clarion scored the next three to take the set 25-18 and take the match 3-0.

Kate Hennessy led the Lakers in kills with eleven. Paige Miller added seven, and Maggie Thomas added five. Kate Hennessy and Kaitlin Murphy each had a service ace. Alexa Mitchell tallied two blocks and 23 assists. Paige Miller added ten digs.
