Edinboro, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team traveled to Edinboro for a PSAC matchup. After getting down early in each set, the Lakers fought back in each one, but their comeback attempts fell short as Edinboro won the match in three sets.
How it Happened
Kate Hennessy got the scoring started for the Lakers with a kill. After Edinboro got the early lead, Ersa Akcay and Andrea Zaric combined for a block to pull a point closer. Maggie Thomas and Kate Hennessy went back-to-back with kills to make the score 9-7 in favor of Edinboro. Edinboro was able to pull away from the Lakers, but there was no quit in them. Alia Mastromatteo got the serve and was able to go back-to-back with service aces. Mastromatteo kept the serve, and the Lakers took advantage of some Edinboro mistakes and climbed back into the set. The score was now 14-13 Edinboro. Edinboro took a timeout. Right out of the timeout, Kate Hennessy tied it up at 14 with a kill. Edinboro went on a short run to regain the lead. The run was ended by an Andrea Zaric kill. Edinboro went on a short run again and was able to close out the first set. Edinboro took the set 25-20.
After an Andrea Zaric kill, set two was tied up at six. Edinboro went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 14-6 lead. Mevelyn Brazonban and Kate Hennessy notched kills to cut into the Edinboro lead. It was now 16-11. A few points later, Corinne Bechtold subbed into the match, and immediately got a kill. Edinboro finished set two on a 7-2 run to take set two 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Edinboro started set three on a 6-1 run. Kate Hennessy ended that run with a kill. Edinboro then jumped out to a 12-4 lead early in the set. Kate Hennessy cut into the lead with another kill. After some back and forth, the Lakers cut into with kills from Andrea Zaric and Mevelyn Brazonban. The Lakers run in the third set wasn't enough as Edinboro won set three 25-15 and took the match 3-0.
Highlights
Kate Hennessy led the Lakers in kills with nine, Andrea Zaric and Maggie Thomas were right behind with six. Alia Mastromatteo finished with 12 assists, and Madalynn Ward finished with 10. Mastromatteo also had three service aces in the match. Paige Miller and Andrea Zaric both had eight digs.
