Field Hockey Falls in OT Thriller

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst hosted Frostburg State Tuesday afternoon with the Bobcats playing spoilers and getting the win on the road. Mercyhurst got off to a fast start, but Frostburg State scored a pair of goals in the second half to tie things up before ultimately securing the win in overtime.

How it Happened

Mercyhurst fired the opening salvo of the game midway through the first period. The two teams felt each other out in the early going with the Lakers finding the right time to strike as Ellie Schau scored the goal out in front of the cage off of the assist from Amy Van Rooyen. Coach Hadfield's crew did not wait around all too long to get their second goal of the game, doing so just two minutes later. Mercyhurst played the ball up the field and found themselves in a breakaway with Lexi Odrobina finishing off the opportunity from the pass from Madison Kasten.

The offense cooled off from there with neither team getting on the board in the second period. Frostburg did manage to outshoot the Lakers 5-0 in the period, hoping to begin to grab the momentum. The Bobcats finally broke through in the third period with their first goal of the game, making it a 2-1 game with just three minutes remaining in the period. They then tied things with just over four minutes expired from the clock in the fourth, making things very interesting the rest of the way. Neither team could break the tie in regulation as the final few minutes were back-and-forth.

Frostburg did not wait around all too long to grab the overtime win with them scoring just one minute into the period. They took control of the ball at the whistle and continually worked their way up the field until an opening for Emilie Bonhivart showed itself, ending the game.

Highlights

Ellie Schau scored her sixth goal of the season, tying Jenna Cavalieri once again for the team lead while Lexi Odrobina was able to help keep the gap at the top at just one as she now has five goals to her ledger. Amy Van Rooyen grabbed her second assist of the season while Madison Kasten recorded her first. Kayla Desormeau had seven saves in the game while allowing just two goals in regulation, her fewest since September 1st in the team's 12-0 win.

Next Game

Mercyhurst goes on the road for their next game as they now prepare for the trip to Bloomsburg. The Lakers match up with the Huskies on Saturday, October 14th, with the two teams set to meet at 12:00 p.m.
