Gaffney, S.C.—The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team fell to Limestone 1-0 while wrapping up their road trip to open the season.
How it Happened
The Lakers and Saints both entered the game looking for their first wins and first goals. In the opening quarter Limestone tallied two shots to the Lakers one. None of the shots in the first 15 minutes tested the netminders. Mercyhurst drew the lone corner in the quarter.
In the second quarter both teams generated some scoring opportunities but could not capitalize. Both the Saints and Lakers tallied two shots while both netminders made one save. Limestone earned two corners in the quarter but could not take advantage.
The third quarter was a physical one full of fouls as the Lakers committed 15 and drew 11. Limestone took four shots and the two that were on goal were turned away by Kayla Desormeau.
After a game of back and forth action the fourth quarter did not disappoint. Despite the Lakers not registering a shot they had multiple scoring opportunities but could not beat the keeper. Limestone had seven shots (five on goal). Limestone got on the board with just over 10 minutes left of the clock. Despite their best efforts the Lakers could not strike back.
By The Numbers
The Lakers earned six corners in the game while they took three shots. Desormeau made seven saves and now has a .786 save percentage this season.
