Field Hockey Notches First Win of 2022

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Saxon Stadium. The Lakers defeated the Franklin Pierce Ravens by a score of 2-1.

How it Happened

In the opening frame of the contest neither team could take the lead. Mercyhurst took four shots on goal but all of them were saved. Mercyhurst keeper Kayla Desormeau saw three shots come her way and she turned away all three of them.

In the second quarter, the Lakers took just one shot but made it count. Off a corner Jenna Cavalieri took the pass and fed it back down low to Elizabeth Jackson. Jackson made no mistake and beat the keeper for her first goal of the season.

Desormeau made two saves in the second and the Lakers went into the half up 1-0.

The third quarter was full of back and forth play but neither team could generate much offense. FPU had the only two shots and neither found the goal.

Both offenses came back to life in the fourth quarter as there was a total of nine shots and six corners. The Ravens struck first in the fourth to tie the game at one with less than 12 minutes remain. Just over three minutes later, the Lakers took their lead back. Kayla Gill forced a turnover deep in the FPU zone and went one on one with the keeper and scored. It was her first of the season.

Desormeau made six saves in her first win of the season.
