Gaffney, S.C.—In the first game of their 2022 season the Mercyhurst Field Hockey team fell to Belmont Abbey by a score of 2-0.
How it Happened
The first quarter was full of back and forth play with limited scoring opportunities. There was a total of just three shots with only one finding the net. Kayla Desormeau turned away the only shot she faced in the opening quarter.
The second quarter consisted of 26 total fouls while there were only three shots on goal. All three shots were taken by the Crusaders but all the shots were once again turned away by Desormeau. Despite being outshot in the first half the Lakers were still tied with Belmont Abbey.
The Lakers once again limited opportunities in the third quarter as the Crusaders generated just one shot but Desormeau turned the shot away.
Belmont Abbey beat Desormeau twice in the fourth quarter and that was good enough to secure the win.
Collegiate Debuts
Emerson Polkowski, Maddie Huffer, and Delfina Magro all made their first collegiate starts while Vera Wevers came off the bench for her first collegiate appearance.

The Lakers drew four corners while Desormeau made five saves.
