Baseball Wins Weekend Series Over UPJ With Saturday Sweep

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team earned a PSAC West series win with a sweep of UPJ on Saturday with a 7-2 win and a 1-0 shutout win.

Game One (W, 7-2)

The Lakers put up a six spot in the second inning and John Susnik opened the scoring with a sac fly that drove in Luke Jackson to open the scoring. Troy Banks followed it up with a single that Jack Elliott scored. The Lakers scored the third run of the game on a Casimer Sobaszek fielders choice that allowed Chris Juchno scored on the play to put the Lakers up three. With Banks and Sobaszek on base, Josh Surowiec blasted his eighth homer of the season to make it 6-0 homer of the season.

In the third inning the Lakers made it a 7-0 on a Susnik single that scored Jackson who was on second following a leadoff walk.

The Lakers held the Mountain Cats off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when UPJ hit a two run homer with two outs in the frame.

Daniel Thomas turned his second straight complete game as he went seven innings while allowing two hits and two runs while striking out six. He earned his third win of the season in his sixth start of the season.

Game Two (W, 1-0)

Aiden Kelly started on the mound the Lakers, he went five innings on the mound and allowed just three hits while striking out five. Jacob Bazala took over in the sixth in and allowed two hits while also striking out two while earning his second save of the season.

The only offense came in the second inning as Chris Juchno hit a tower drive to center field that cleared the fence on the windy Erie day. Matthew Gibson notched two hits while Elliott had the only other Laker hit in the contest.

Chasing History

Head Coach Joe Spano notched career wins 698 and 699 in his storied Mercyhurst carrer. On Tuesday he goes for win number 700 against Notre Dame College. Spano is currently 25th in Division II in wins among active coaches and second among PSAC head coaches.
