Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team fell on Tuesday afternoon to the Notre Dame Falcons, 8-7 at home.
How It Happened
The Lakers opened the scoring on their first hit of the game in bottom of the second inning as Luke Jackson hit a towering homer to center field.
Neither team scored in the third inning, in the fourth, NDC took a 2-1 lead as two runners scored on a throwing error.
Mercyhurst took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. Philip Ferranti started the inning with a single, Jackson followed it up by getting hit by a pitch. Jack Elliott was up next and took a 1-0 pitch over the left center field wall for his fifth homer of the season.
Notre Dame put up six runs in the sixth inning, which included a grand slam to make the score 8-4.
In the seventh the Lakers started their comeback at they chipped away. Josh Surowiec grounded out which brought Casimer Sobaszek in for the fifth Laker run.
The Lakers held NDC in the top of the eighth. With one out in the frame Chris Juchno hit a 3-2 homer following an eight pitch battle. After a pitching change, Elliott stepped to the dish and went back to back with Juchno to make it a one run game.
The comeback came up just short as the Lakers Surowiec grounded into a double play to end the game.
Matt Shepard started on the mound and went 3.2 innings while notching five strikeouts. He allowed two runs on three hits. Corbin Foy took over in the fourth and went two full innings. He struckout four while six runs (one earned) scored. After Josh Greggs walked two, Robert Hartman came in for 3.1 innings. He allowed just two hits while striking out three.
