Thomas Leads Baseball to a Series Finale Win Over Gannon

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team split the second of two doubleheader with the Gannon Golden Knights at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field on Sunday.

Game One (L, 7-5)

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of first inning as Josh Surowiec drove in Matthew Gibson with a single. In the bottom of the second the Lakers added to their lead with a Gibson double to the left center gap, Philip Ferranti scored on the play.

Gannon took the lead in the top of the third inning with a sac fly and a three run homer.

In the bottom of the third, the Lakers responded with three runs of their own to take the lead back. Ferranti singled to drive in Luke Jackson for the third Laker run. One batter later, Logan Martella-Tasick doubled off the wall to bring Ferranti and Jack Elliott across the plate.

The Golden Knights tied the game and took the lead in fifth inning, they added one more run in the sixth to make it 7-5.

Josh Greggs started on the mound and went 2.1 innings, he allowed three runs on no hits while striking out one. Jacob Bazala took over in the third and went an inning and two-thirds, he allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit. Aiden Kelly went the final three innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out four.

Game Two (W, 3-0)

Daniel Thomas took the ball for his fourth start of the season and mowed down the Golden Knights. He face just two over the minimum as he had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning. He allowed one walk in the first inning and a swinging bunt base hit in the fifth inning. He struckout eight in his first career complete game.

The first Laker run came in the fourth inning on an error as the Gannon pitcher overthrew the first basemen on a pickoff attempt, Elliott scored on the play.

In the fifth the Lakers had runners on first and second with no outs, Ferranti drove one to right field that was dropped by the right fielder. Both runners scored and Ferranti scampered to third on the play.

Thomas' complete game shutout is the first since Vincenzo Lucente did it on May 5th, 2021 against Clarion. Prior to that the last one was nine inning complete game shutout by Christian Young on May 18th, 2019 against Bloomsburg.
