Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst baseball team picked up their third and final win of the season over the Lake Erie Storm on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 8-5.
How it Happened
Neither team could crack each other and the teams remained scoreless until the fifth inning. The Lakers had a no hitter after five innings for despite allowing a run in the fifth.
Matt Shepard went 4.1 innings allowing one run on no hits and two walks, he struckout six.
After Lake Erie manufactured a run in top of the fifth, the Lakers responded in the bottom of the sixth. Casimer Sobaszek struckout but reached first on a passed ball. Josh Surowiec followed it up with a walk and Sobaszek moved to third on a wild pitch. Philip Ferranti drove in the first Laker run of the day with a single to left field that brought Sobaszek home.
With runners on first and second Jack Elliott pulled one to right that scored Surowiec to make it 2-1 Mercyhurst.
Brandon Arnold kept the Laker lead safe as he threw a laser to home plate to cut down a runner in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth the Lakers extended their lead as Matthew Gibson doubled down the left field line to bring inArnold from third. Surowiec then hit a taylor made double play ball but Lake Erie threw it away allowing two Lakers to come across to make it 5-1.
Lake Erie responded in the top of seventh with four runs, three of which came from a homer, all four runs were unearned.
The contest looked to be going to extra innings until Elliott came up with runners on first and second. Following a mound visit from the Lake Erie pitching coach, Elliott blasted a no-doubter over the right field wall on the first pitch he saw to make it 8-5.
Corbin Foy took over for Shepard in the fifth and with 3.1 innings allowing four unearned runs on five hits while striking out three. Ben Berdine picked up his first career win as he went an inning and a third allowing just one hit, he also struckout one while getting three groundouts.
