Avon, OH—The Mercyhurst Laker bats woke up in the seventh inning as they scored 11 runs in the inning to drive them to a 13-2 win against Notre Dame College.
The Laker offense only generated three hits in the opening six innings while not pushing a run across. The Falcons scored runs in the second and third innings, after six full innings the Lakers were trailing 2-0 to the Falcons.
The seventh inning proved to be a breakout inning, the Lakers scored 11 runs in the frame. The inning started with back-to-back free passes as Philip Ferranti was hit by a pitch and Ryan Perretti walked. Matthew Gibson singled up the middle to drive in the first Laker run. After a Casimer Sobaszek bunt single Josh Surowiec drove in two runs to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Mercyhurst notched eight hits in the frame while bring 11 runs across the plate.
In the eighth inning the Lakers added to their lead as Sobaszek and Surowiec drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to extend the Laker lead.
Eight Lakers notched hits in the game with five of them having two hits. To go along with 13 hits the Lakers drew 11 walks in the game. Of the 11 RBIs the Laker generated Surowiec and Sobaszek combined for seven while Jackson drive in two and Troy Banks and Gibson drove in two.
Matt Shepard started on the mound and went 2.2 innings in his first collegiate start, he struckout five while giving up two runs. Corbin Foy took over in the third inning and got the final out of the inning. In total Foy went 3.1 innings giving up just two hits while striking out eight in the process. After facing 14 batters Foy's day was done and he gave the ball to freshman Ben Berdine. In his third appearance of the season, Berdine tossed two hitless innings while allowing just one base runner via a walk. He struckout four of the seven batters he saw. Spencer Curran took over in the ninth and got three groundball outs to end the game.
Mercyhurst starts their second PSAC West series on Friday as Gannon makes the trip to Mercyhurst for a doubleheader. The Lakers head down State Street on Saturday to take on the Golden Knights.
