Baseball Downs Clarion in PSAC Home Opener

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team sent a message to the rest of the PSAC West with a pair of blowout wins over the Clarion Golden Eagles.

Game One (W,10-3)

The Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, Matthew Gibson and Casimer Sobaszek earned early walks and both advanced on a passed ball to put two runners in scoring position. Josh Surowiec and Troy Banks both had productive outs as they grounded out to drive runs in and give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.

The offense continued in the second inning as Jack Elliott blasted his second homer in as many days, he drove in Philip Ferranti to make it 4-0 Lakers.

Clarion added a run in the third inning thanks to a solo home run.

Gibson notched his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning as he drove in Aidan Shephard and Elliott to make it 7-1.

In the top half of the fifth the Golden Eagles cut the Laker lead to four as they hit a two run home run.

Surowiec pulled a single off the first base bag to drive in Gibson for the eighth Laker run of the game. Later in the inning with the bases load Surowiec scored as Chris Juchno was hit by a pitch to drive in the ninth Laker run.

The Lakers cracked double digits as Ferranti drove in Banks with a groundout.

Josh Greggs went four innings on the mound, he allowed one earned run on just four hits. He struckout three while walking just two in his second win of the season.

Jacob Bazala earned his first career save after going three innings, he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one and getting five groundouts.

Game Two (W, 15-5)

In the first two innings of the game neither team had much going offensively. Mercyhurst put up their first crooked number of the game in the third inning. Juchno hit a moonshot to right field that scored Banks and Surowiec.

The Lakers put up another crooked number in the fourth inning as they pushed four across. Gibson started it with a sac fly that brought Elliott across to make it 4-0. Sobaszek was the next batter, he singled and brought John Susnik in. With Sobaszek on first Surowiec hit his fifth homer of the season to make it 7-0.

In the top half of the fifth Clarion added four runs, two unearned. In the bottom half of the inning, the Lakers responded by scoring eight runs. Gibson, Sobaszek, Juchno, and Elliott drove in runs while Surowiec hit his second homer of the game.

Clarion added their fifth run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.
