Box Score BUFFALO, NY – The Mercyhurst women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the 2022 season on Wednesday evening on the road at D'Youville by a 13 to 6 margin. The victory marked Sam Stuss's first career victory as the head coach of Mercyhurst women's lacrosse.
It was all Mercyhurst in the first half as the Lakers jumped out to a 7-2 lead after the contests opening the first two quarters. Maggie Newton and Julia Ruscio both recorded first half hat-tricks for the Lakers while Marissa Comerate tacked on the other goal for Mercyhurst in the half. D'Youville only managed to get two of their 12 first half shots past Mercyhurst Kaitlyn Lippert in goal. Danielle Thompson and Riley Riedel were credited with the two Saint goals in the half.
Comerate notched the first tally of the third period less than a minute into second half action that put the Lakers up 8-2. D'Youville responded five minutes later to pull the score within five, however, Laker goals by Newton and
Rachel Hirst put Mercyhurst up by a comfortable 10-3 margin. The Saints rounded out the quarter with another tally, this time coming from Sydney Gordan to make the score 10-4 Mercyhurst entering the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Maggie Newton added two more goals to for a six goal performance in just her second game as a Laker. Fellow Freshman
Marlee Antinora scored her first career collegiate goal and the Lakers went on the win by a 13-6 margin over the Saints. Lippert finished the contest with 13 saves on 19 shots faced.
The Lakers will travel back to Erie where they will host their home opener on the turf at Saxon stadium this Friday at 4:00 p.m. against Tiffin University.
