Baseball Sweeps Season Series With Salem

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst kept on their winning ways as they defeated Salem 14-4 at home on Friday afternoon.

The offense started in the first inning as Troy Banks drove in Matthew Gibson with a sac fly to open the scoring in the first inning.

In the second inning the Lakers launched two homers and Chris Juchno and Casimer Sobaszek hit solo homers just one batter apart.

Josh Surowiec opened the third inning with a solo homer to make it a four run lead.  With two outs in the inning the Lakers blasted their fourth homer of the game as Luke Jackson hit his second homer of the season to put the Lakers up five runs in the third inning.

Salem got on the board in the fifth inning to make it 5-1.

Banks answered back in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo homer of his own. Mercyhurst's Aidan Shephard hit his fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the sixth to push the Laker lead to 7-1.

In the top of the seventh Salem started to claw back a bit and scored three runs to make it a three run game.

The three run deficit for Salem was short lived as Philip Ferranti hit a three run homer in the seventh to regain the six run Laker lead and make it 10-4 Mercyhurst.

Salem was held off the board the rest of the game and the Lakers extended their lead in the eighth. Surowiec roped a double down the right field line which drove in two. Later in the inning Jackson doubled to drive in two and third Laker run came in due to a Salem error.

Nathan Holt got the ball on the bump to start and went three solid innings striking out three and allowed just one base runner due to a walk.

Josh Greggs took over for an inning and third and struckout two while allowing just one earned run.

John Bufford took the ball for Greggs and went 2.2 innings while allowing three hits and three runs while having three strikeouts.

In the eight Jarrett Heilmann took over and continued his hot start as he scatted two hits while striking out five of the eight batters he saw.

The Lakers host Ashland on Wednesday at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field.
