Baseball Splits PSAC Opener With Clarion

Slippery Rock, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team split their first PSAC West doubleheader of the season against the Clarion Golden Eagles.

Game One (L, 4-1)

The Lakers only notched three hits in their first PSAC West game of the season. Clarion scored the first run of the game in the second inning and tacked on their second run in the bottom half of the third inning.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Lakers got on the board thanks to a Chris Juchno homer with two outs. That was the last hit the Lakers registered, they only got one more base runner on and that was in the seventh with one out.

Daniel Thomas started on the mound, he went two-plus innings allowing two runs on two hits. Jacob Bazala took over on the mound and went 1.2 innings, he allowed two runs on one hit while striking out one. Aiden Kelly was the final pitcher for Mercyhurst, he went 2.1 innings and struckout three while not allowing a run.

Aidan Shephard, Luke Jackson, and Juchno were the only Lakers to record hits in game one.

Game Two (W, 10-2)

Unlike the first game of the day the Laker bats go going in the first inning as Troy Banks hit a two out two run home run to put the Lakers in front in the first inning. Jackson notched a two run homer of his own in the first inning to give the Lakers a 4-0 lead after the top half of the inning.

In the fourth the Lakers added another run as Jack Elliott scored on a Casimer Sobaszek sac fly.

The Lakers put up a five spot in the fifth inning, Elliott blasted his first homer of the season to drive in three runs to put the Lakers up 8-0. One batter later, Matthew Gibson hit the Lakers fourth homer of the game to make it 9-0.

In the sixth the Lakers hit double digits as Jackson scored on an infield single from Elliott.

Jarrett Heilman turned in another dominate effort on the bump, he allowed just three hits over six complete innings. He struckout seven and walked just one while getting six groundouts and four flyouts.

Corey Shields took over in the seventh inning, he struckout one and got a flyout and a groundout.
