Baseball Dissolves the Storm In Home Opener

 

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team swept the Lake Erie Storm by scored of 22-3 and 7-2 in their first home action of the 2022 season.

Game One (W, 22-3)

Daniel Thomas started on the mound for the Lakers and went five innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out ten while allowing no walks. Corbin Foy took over in the sixth inning, he struckout two while allowing one hit and two unearned runs. Matt Shepard took the ball in the seventh and struckout two of the three hitters he faced to secure the win for Mercyhurst.

11 Lakers had hits in the blowout win including Josh Surowiec and Michael Ferl who were the lone two Lakers to have multi-hit games.

Chris Juchno notched his first career homer while driving in three runs on the round tripper. Logan Martella-Tasick also drove in three runs for the Lakers after entering the lineup later in the game.

The Lakers as a team drew 11 walks and six Lakers were given free passes due to being hit by the pitch.

Mercyhurst used the longball to their advantage by blasting two homers in the opening game, Aidan Morrison hit his second homer of the season in the sixth inning that drove in three runs to make the scored 20-3.

The 22 runs scored in the most runs the Lakers have scored since beating IUP 25-3 on Mar. 25, 2017, the Lakers went 38-8 that season and made an NCAA appearance.

Game Two (W, 7-2)

The second game was a much different game as Lake Erie walked just one while hitting two Mercyhurst batters.

Aiden Kelly made his first start of the season and was one of three freshman to get the ball for the Lakers. Kelly went four strong innings allowing just three hits and striking out five. Jacob Bazala pitched a scoreless fifth inning while striking out one of the three batters he saw. Ben Berdine pitched the sixth and allowed two runs on one hit. Robert Hartman shut it down in the seventh as he struckout one and worked around two singles.

Matthew Gibson led the way offensively for the Lakers blasted a grand slam in the fourth inning to put the Lakers up 5-0.

Ryan Perretti went 2-2 at the dish while driving in two and scoring three as he homered in the sixth inning to extend the Laker lead.

John Susnik was the third Laker to record two hits in game two as Mercyhurst needed just six hits to beat Lake Erie in game two.
