Field Hockey Defeats Wingate at Home

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team notched their second win of the season on Monday afternoon as they honored their senior class. They defeated Wingate 4-3 on a sunny fall day.

How it Happened

The Lakers jumped on the Bulldogs from the start. Just 38 seconds into the game Jenna Cavalieri scored to make it 1-0. Cavalieri took a long pass from Allyson Doran and tapped it into the open net to take the early lead.

After the first quarter the Lakers led 1-0 despite being tied in shots, the Lakers also had two penalty corners while Wingate did not earn any.

With less than three minutes left in the second quarter the Lakers doubled their lead. Delfina Magro took a long shot from just inside the scoring area and beat the goalkeeper. It was Magro's first collegiate goal.

At halftime the Lakers led 2-0 and were outshooting the Bulldogs 10-6. Kayla Desormeau made three saves in the first half.

Rhyden Wheldon took over in goal in the second half. She ended the game with three saves as well.

Wingate got on the board just 1:01 into the third quarter to cut the Laker lead in half.

Mercyhurst responded just over four minutes later as Maddie Huffer scored her first career goal.

Neither team scored again in the third quarter, Wingate outshot the Lakers 6-2 but the Lakers still led 3-1.

The Bulldogs made it a one goal game once again as they scored just six minutes into the fourth quarter.

With less than five minutes remaining in regulation time, Madison Kasten scored to make it a two goal game once again. Margo earned an assist on the play.

Wingate wouldn't give in however and scored again to make it 4-3 with less than three minutes remaining.
Mercyhurst held on to their lead as the clock hit zero to secure their second win of the season.

Day of Firsts
