Edinboro, Pa.—Playing in their first double-overtime game of the season, the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team dropped a close contest at Edinboro Wednesday night.
How it Happened
After the Fighting Scots finished the first quarter ahead 18-15, the Lakers came on strong with a 14-point run to take the lead and go up by 10.
The Lakers would hold on to finish the first half ahead 39-32.
Mercyhurst outscored Edinboro again in the third quarter, but a 30-point fourth frame allowed Edinboro to catch up and finish regulation tied 78-78.
In overtime, the Fighting Scots took an early lead on a pair of free throws, but Nicolette Arnold answered quickly with a layup to tie it up again. After Edinboro took a three-point lead, Emily Shopene nailed two free throws at 2:08 and another with 39 seconds left to tie the game. The Fighting Scots missed a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to send the game to a second overtime period.
Mercyhurst again put up five points in the second overtime period thanks to three free throws from Shopene and an Arnold layup, but Edinboro put up eight points to finish ahead.
By the Numbers
The Lakers have now taken four games this season to at least one overtime period. This is the first season in program history that featured more than two overtime games. The Lakers are 2-2 in games that take longer than 40 minutes to decide this season.
Jayde Boyd led all scorers with 20 points, with Shopene adding 15 in the effort. Grace Centrulla posted her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for Mercyhurst were Julia Buchman (12 points) and redshirt freshman Lauren Klare, who scored a career-high 10 points.
