Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team opening their season on the Monday afternoon as they faced Queens University of Charlotte. The Lakers fell to the Royals by a score of 5-4 in double overtime.
How it Happened
The Royals came out firing, scoring the first goal of the game just 2:29 into the game.
Mercyhurst headed into the second quarter down one, in the first they generated three shots. Freshman goalie Kayla Desormeau saw eight shots in the opening frame.
Just under six minutes into the second quarter the Royals made their lead 2-0. The Lakers went to half down two but were still withing striking distance. Mercyhurst had five shots in the first half have while Desormeau faced 13 shots.
Like the Royals did to start the game, the Lakers came out firing to start the second half. Jenna Cavalieri netted her first goal of the season just a 1:12 into the frame. Cavalieri picked up the loose ball in front and put it past the netminder, Sarah Vosburgh added an assist on the play.
About six minutes later the Royals regained their two-goal lead. 10:45 into the third quater Alexandria Shumsky got the Lakers back within one with her first of the season. Shumsky cleaned up the rebound off a corner play by the Lakers. Katie Goodenow picked up an assist on the play for her first point of the season.
Early in the fourth quarter, Queens pushed thier advantage back to two goals. The Lakers then went back-to-back to even the game up with 5:18 remaining.
Lexi Odrobina scored the third Laker goal, once again a rebound goal off a corner. Odrobina found the ball off the goalie's pad and put it in the net as she fell to the ground. Shumsky netted her second of the game with a wicked shot that went over the goalie into the back of the net.
After the first overtime period, nothing was solved. In the second overtime period the Royals scored just 2:32 into the frame.
By the Numbers
The Laker tallied 13 shots with eight of them being on net. In her first collegiate start Desormeau made 20 saves to keep Lakers within striking distance the whole game. Mercyhurst drew seven corners in the match.
Cavalieri led the way with six shots while Goodenow had three. Shumsky recorded just two shots but both were goals, Fenna Klok and Odrobina each recorded a shot each.
