The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team fell 4-3 to visiting Mansfiled Wednesday afternoon at Saxon Stadium.
Mercyhurst began the match aggressively and jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game. The first goal came off the stick of junior forward
Jenna Cavalieri. Cavalieri took a pass from
Katie Goodenow and finished right in front of the cage.
The second Laker goal was scored with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter; this time Goodenow was the one who earned the score with Cavalieri picking up the assist. Mansfield scored just before time expired in the first on a breakaway shot that would trim the Mercyhurst lead to 2-1 after one.
Mansfield squared things up with 4:39 to go in the second quarter and the 2-2 score would hold until halftime.
The Mountaineers led in shots 11-7 at the break. In her second career collegiate start
Kayla Desormeau stopped four of the six shots she saw on target in the first two quarters.
Mansfield took their first lead of the contest at the 5:48 mark of the third.
Mercyhurst broke through and tied the match at 3-3 with 4:19 to play when freshman
Evelien Hulshof earned her first collegiate goal.
Samantha Myers was credited
with the assist.
Mansfield scored the eventual game-winning goal a minute later with just 3:35 to go on the scoreboard.
The Lakers are back in action on Friday Sept. 10 when they host Belmont Abbey College at 3:00 PM.
