Men's Hockey Hangs with No. 17 Ohio State But Falls 3-2

Columbus, OH—After defeating the No. 17 Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday night, the Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team fell to the nationally ranked Ohio State by a score of 3-2.

How it Happened

The Lakers and Buckeyes couldn't solve each other despite each team having power plays in the opening frame.

Kyle McClellan made nine saves in first period while the Lakers blocked three shots.

At the 15:17 mark of the middle frame, Ohio State scored to make it 1-0. The Lakers responded with three quality scoring chances, but they could not even the score.

Just before the halfway mark of the game, Mickey Burns scored on the power play after a beautiful pass from Kyle McClellan and Rylee St. Onge. Burns deked left and went right and put it in the top of the cage to tie the game at one.

With just over a minute remaining in the period, Ohio State scored to take their lead back and make it 2-1.

Mercyhurst had 15 shots through two periods with McClellan tallying 25 saves. Jake Beaune and Josh McDougall each had three blocks through the opening 40 minutes.

At the 9:22 mark of the third period, Austin Heidemann tied the game with a shot from the side wall that beat the goalie on the short side.

With under nine minutes remaining in the final frame, the Buckeyes scored to take to the lead back.

Mercyhurst couldn't muster up one more goal and fell to the Buckeyes.

McClellan made 40 saves, it was his second 40+ save game of the season. The Lakers blocked 14 shots in the loss, they generated 23 shots.

Battle of Special Teams

The Lakers scored once on the power play while having three attempts, they also generated three shots. Ohio State was 0-4 with the man advantage.
