Women’s Basketball Falls to Ohio University

Athens, Ohio—The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team was back on the road Saturday, this time to take on Division I Ohio University in a 90-46 losing effort.

The Lakers got on the board first after a layup from Meghan Komendarek, but the Bobcats followed that with a 13-point run to get out to an early lead. Emily Shopene then earned Mercyhurst a couple of points from the free throw line, starting a stretch where the Lakers and Bobcats scored eight points each to finish the quarter.

It took almost a full minute into the second quarter for either team to score, but Ohio kept the defensive pressure up, out-scoring Mercyhurst 24-9 in the second frame to take a 45-19 lead to the locker room.

Mercyhurst had their best 10-minute stretch in the third quarter, shooting an even 50 percent from the floor, beyond the arc and from the free-throw line. They would add a game-high 18 points in the frame, but Ohio added 24 of their own to preserve their lead.

After a 21-9 margin in the fourth quarter, Ohio was able to walk away with their second win of the season to improve to 2-2 overall. The Lakers are still in search of their first win of the season after four losses.

Grace Clary led the Lakers with 11 points, as 21 of the Lakers' 46 points came from off the bench. Julia Buchman added nine points as well. Jayde Boyd helped out underneath the net, grabbing six defensive rebounds in the game.
