Winter Park, FL—Coming off an overtime win against Embry-Riddle Friday night, the Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team was not able to spring back for an afternoon matchup against their Florida hosts, Rollins College, Saturday.
The Lakers got out to an early lead with Emily Shopene sinking an early layup and adding an extra free throw before Rollins could score. Mercyhurst would grow their lead to six points before Rollins scored again, but the Tars were able to keep things close and finished the first quarter behind by just three.
The Tars picked up their pace in the second quarter, out-scoring the Lakers 14-12 in the frame to close the deficit to just one point heading into halftime.
Rollins emerged from the locker room a changed team. They made 39 percent of their shots from the floor in the second half (up from 20.5 percent in the first half) and made 10 of their 12 free throw attempts in the final frame as the Lakers were forced to play the foul game late.
The Tars put 33 points on the board over the final two quarters to the Lakers' 24, completing the second-half comeback and walking away with a 56-48 win to salvage their weekend after dropping their first game Friday.
Centrulla posted a double-double for the second night in a row, finishing with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Shopene contributed nine points and Jayde Boyd added nine rebounds to aid the effort.
