GLENVILLE, W.Va. --
Josh Surowiec belted a two-out double in the top of the 11th inning to push across the eventual winning run as the Mercyhurst baseball team opened the 2020 season with a 5-4 victory over Concord University Saturday afternoon on the campus of Glenville State College.
The Lakers held a 4-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth, but the Mountain Lions pushed a pair of runs across to tie the game.
Concord threatened again in the tenth, but
Jared Kapturasky struck out a pair of batters with the bases loaded to send the game to the 11th and set up Surowiec's game-winning double.
The Moutain Lions struck first in the third inning, but Mercyhurst answered in the fifth with a pair of runs driven in by
Jack Elliott and
Hunter Snyder to give the Lakers a 2-1 advantage.
Mercyhurst took advantage of a throwing error on a double steal and an RBI single from
Dominic Cecere in the seventh to extend the lead to 4-1.
Concord picked up a run on a solo home run in the eighth before tying the game in the ninth.
Kapturasky picked up the win in relief going two scoreless innings, allowing one hit along with two intentional walks while striking out four.
Luke Baranchak scored a pair of runs for the Lakers going 1-for-4 at the dish. Snyder and Cecere also went 1-for-4 while driving in a run. Elliott was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday when they take on Glenville State at 11 a.m.
