MILLERSVILLE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team will advance to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional I Finals tomorrow after knocking off host, Millersville in a pitching duel, 2-0.
Jack Elliott recorded two of the Lakers five hits in the win today with
Domenic DeRenzo recording an RBI.
In the first inning, both teams would go three up, three down to open the contest. Millersville got the sticks going in the second inning after a Trainer and Hardaway single. Both runners would be stranded on first and third when Minnick forced Graham to pop up to end the top half of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, MU still struggled to get the bats going with another 1,2,3 inning. Mercyhurst would do this in the third as well before
Jack Elliott would get the first hit for the Lakers in the fourth inning.
Â
In the top of the sixth, Millersville would get runners on first and second with one out, before Minnick would force Luke Trainer to ground into a double play. This would be a huge momentum changer for the Lakers going into the home half of the inning.Â
Â
The bottom of the sixth would start with
Luke Baranchak being granted first base after being hit by the pitch.
Dominic Cecere would lay down a beautiful bunt to advance Baranchak to second base with now one out in the inning.Â
Domenic DeRenzo would come up clutch hitting a double down the left field line to score Baranchak and give the green and blue a 1-0 lead.Â
Matthew Gibson kept the momentum in the Lakers corner after a swinging bunt to third allowing DeRenzo to score as MU went up 2-0.Â
Â
Minnick wouldn't allow the Marauders to answer, forcing two of the batters to fly out and struck out the final one of the top half of the inning after walking the first.
Jared Kapturasky would come in for Minnick in the 8th and was in the zone from the start. Kapturasky sent Millersville back into the field after a three up three down inning as he picked right back up where Minnick left off.
Â
Kap really had to dial in for the top half of the ninth after hitting Trainer and allowing Hardaway to single giving the Ville a chance with two outs and runners on first and second. After starting the next at bat 0-2, Millersville's own Nick Graham would battle back to make it 2-2 before Kapturasky of Mercyhurst would force him to pop of in foul territory to
Matthew Schneider to seal the 2-0 Laker win.
Â
Matthew Minnick would earn the win going seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out eight. Kapturasky would pick up the huge save going the final two innings of the game forcing four flyouts, two groundouts and only allowing one hit.
Â
Cordell Shannon would get the loss for the Marauders going six innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and recorded six strikeouts.
Â
Next Up: The Lakers will face Bloomsburg in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional I Championship at 11:00 AM tomorrow. If the Lakers were to lose the first game, the second and final game will begin at roughly 2:30 PM.
