#42 Men's Tennis Clinches Second Straight PSAC Regular-Season Title

EDINBORO, Pa. -- The 42nd-ranked Mercyhurst men's tennis team claimed the PSAC regular-season championship with a 5-2 victory over Edinboro on Monday. This marks the second consecutive season that the Lakers have won the conference crown. They have won 10 straight PSAC regular-season contests, dating back to 2018.

DOUBLES
  • The Lakers jumped ahead for a 1-0 lead with wins in 2 of 3 doubles contests.
  • After EU claimed the first doubles decision, the 19th-ranked duo of Cormac McCooey and Unai Amilleta Gonzalez pulled Mercyhurst even with a 6-4 win against Kevin Mboko and Julius Schulte on the top tier.
  • Ruairidh Fraser and Arseniy Sklyarov locked up the Lakers' doubles point with a win at No. 2, edging Mateus Santos and Tommy Hsu, 7-5.

SINGLES
  • Sklyarov pushed the MU advantage to 2-0 with his straight-set win over Mboko, 6-2, 7-5, in the No. 5 match.
  • McCooey defeated Mateus Santos, 6-2, 6-3, in the top match to put Mercyhurst on the brink of victory.
  • After the Fighting Scots answered with their first singles win, Amilleta Gonzalez provided Mercyhurst's clinching point by answering a 1-0 set deficit to outlast Mauricio Santos in the No. 2 matchup, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
  • Fraser tacked on the Lakers' fifth point at No. 3 with a three-set victory over Nils Plutat, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-1.

NEXT UP
  • Mercyhurst (15-2, 5-0) will visit Bluefield State in a non-conference contest on Saturday. The meeting will feature the top two ranked squads in the Atlantic Region: The Lakers are No. 1 while BSU is No. 2.
  • The Lakers are set for a semifinal matchup with four-seed Bloomsburg (6-6, 2-3) in the PSAC Tournament, which will start on Friday, May 3. The other semifinal involves two-seed Edinboro (14-5, 4-1) and three-seed Millersville (3-2, 7-8). The finals will follow on Saturday, May 4.
