BUTLER, Pa.—After todays victories, Mercyhurst Baseball swept the weekend series over Slippery Rock. In Game three,
Tyler Garbee recorded a no-hitter in the 2-0 win.
Game One (W, 2-0):
Tyler Garbee pitched a no-hitter in the game one victory over SRU. Garbee through a complete game and also recorded 12 strikeouts in his stellar performance.
Alex O'Donnell led the Lakers with two hits on the day while
Matthew Gibson and
Zach Mitchell both recorded an RBI in the 2-0 win.
Garbee averaged at least a strikeout every inning with three of them coming in the bottom of the sixth making SRU go one, two, three.
Matthew Gibson would get the sticks going for Mercyhurst with a solo homerun to right center breaking the scoreless game. In the Fourth,
Dominic Cecere would keep it going doubling down the right field line to get the inning underway.
Ben Monti would move Cecere over to third after a hit back to the pitcher before
Zach Mitchell singled scoring Cecere, putting MU up 2-0.
Garbee would continue to deal throughout the whole game, shutting out the Rock and sealing the victory.
Losing pitcher was SRU's own Wyatt Daugherty (3-4) who went five innings, allowed five hits and recorded four strikeouts.
Game Two (W, 11-6):
Matthew Gibson,
Alex O'Donnell,
Matthew Schneider,
Josh Surowiec and
Luke Baranchak all led the Lakers with two hits each in the game with
Josh Surowiec recording four RBI.
In the first, Mercyhurst (24-8, 14-6) jumped out early with a
Jack Elliott sinlge to right field scoring Gibson. Later in the inning, a
Josh Surowiec triple would allow three Lakers to cross home plate. During the play, Surowiec would score as well due to an error by Slippery Rock making the score 5-0 MU.
The green and blue would keep the bats rolling in the second with Gibson scoring again but this time off of an O'Donnell double to left center. Surowiec would add another RBI to his total with a single up the middle scoring O'Donnell as well. This would make the score 7-1 Lakers.
Matthew Schneider would tack another run on for the Lakers in the fourth scoring O'Donnell. Dom DeRenzo would triple in the sixth inning to score Cecere making the score 10-3. O'Donnell would then add some insurance scoring Mitchell in the seventh.
Slippery Rock (12-21, 3-15) would show some life in its final at bats but it wouldn't be enough, allowing MU to earn the win, 11-6 and sweep the PSAC weekend series for the first time this year.
Russell Lamovec would earn his fourth win of the year going three innings, allowing only three hits, no earned runs and recorded three strikeouts.
Tanner Stanz (2-4) would get his fourth loss of the year after pitching 1.1 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs.
NEXT UP: The Lakers will travel to Clarion to take on the Golden Eagles on Friday to start the conference weekend series.
