Baseball Takes Both at Home Over Clarion on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa.—The Mercyhurst baseball team took the first two games of the weekend series over Clarion on Senior Day.

Game One (W, 10-5):
Seven different Lakers in the first game had one hit each. Surowiec had one of the seven hits and also led the team with 2 RBI.
On the rubber, Christian Young earned the win going five innings, recording five strikeouts and allowed three earned runs. Jared Kapturasky got the save pitching the final two innings of the game and recorded four strikeouts including three in the sixth, striking out the side.

In the bottom of the second, Mercyhurst was able to score first off of a Luke Baranchak single through the right side scoring Surowiec.  Due to an error on the play, Matthew Schneider would cross home as well making the score 2-0 Lakers.  Zach Mitchell would keep the bats going, doubling down the left field line to Baranchak, giving the Lakers an early 3-0 lead.

Clarion would tie the game before an Alex O'Donnell single would score Mitchell allowing MU to retake the lead, 4-3. The green and blue would add some insurance scoring six more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give them a 10-3 lead.

Clarion would try to answer by scoring two runs but it wouldn't be enough allowing MU to take game one.

Game Two (W, 5-3):
In game two, Matthew Schneider would get the sticks going early with a two-run homer in the first inning give Mercyhurst (26-8) an early 2-0 lead.  Clarion (17-25) would keep it close scoring one run in the third off of a double down the left field line.

Lakers' own Matthew Schneider would tack on another RBI giving him his third on the night after hitting a sacrifice fly to score Elliott making the score 3-1 MU. Schneider led the team in RBI with three.

Surowiec would add to the lead, doubling down the left field line scoring O'Donnell. The Golden Eagles would respond with just one of their own in the fourth making it 4-2 before Domenic DeRenzo would homer to left field making it 5-2.  Neither team would score another run in the game, giving Mercyhurst its second win of the game.

Matthew Minnick would earn the win going six innings, only allowing two hits and striking out 10.  Adam Jeannette would relieve Minnick in the sixth and picked up two strikeouts.

After the two key wins today, there is now a three way tie for first place in the PSAC West (Mercyhurst, California (Pa.) and Gannon).
