#29 Men's Tennis Earns Sixth Straight Victory

FAIRMONT, W. Va. -- The 29th-ranked Mercyhurst men's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over non-conference opponent Fairmont State on Saturday.

The Lakers won 2 of 3 doubles matches and 5 of 6 singles contests, securing the match with Cormac McCooey's win at No. 1 singles.

Doubles
  • Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead with victories at Nos. 1 and 2 in pairs competition after Fairmont State took the first doubles win at No. 3.
  • Arseniy Sklyarov and Claudius Zimmer evened the doubles tally at 1-1 with their 6-1 victory over Joao Martins and Tom Liddy at No. 2.
  • McCooey and Unai Amilleta Gonzalez locked up the Lakers' doubles point with a 6-2 triumph opposite Joao Lucas Alves and Guilherme Pachane.

Singles
  • Amilleta Gonzalez got Mercyhurst started in singles action with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Pachane at No. 2. Shortly after, Sebastian Pardo finished up a 6-3, 7-5, win against Martins at No. 3.
  • McCooey provided the clinching point, pushing the MU advantage to 4-0, when he defeated Lucas Alves, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
  • Skylarov and Felix Schmedding tacked on singles points at No. 4 and 6, respectively. Sklyarov defeated Liddy, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 1-0 (10-8), while Schmedding handled Drew Hawthorne, 6-1, 6-2.
